Stress and Overthinking: 5 Ways to Quiet the Mind Without Fighting It
Overthinking isn’t a personal failure—it’s often a nervous system strategy. Instead of trying to ‘stop thoughts’, these practices help your mind settle naturally.
1) Give the mind a job
Count your exhales from 1 to 10, then start again. If you lose count, gently return to 1.
2) Name the loop
Say (out loud or silently): ‘This is the worry loop.’ Naming creates space.
3) Move one part of the body slowly
Slowly roll your shoulders or turn your head side to side. Slow movement signals safety.
4) Externalize the thoughts
Write the thoughts down for 3 minutes. Don’t edit. Then stop. You’ve given them a container.
5) Ask a different question
Try: ‘What’s the next kind step I can take?’ Not the perfect step—just the kind one.
